George Gilbert and Tim Cusick join host Dirk Friel for a look into the shift of virtual training and how purposeful, science-backed structure can help both athletes and coaches make the most of winter (or year-round) workouts.
George, TrainingPeaks’ VP of Virtual Platforms and the mind behind TrainingPeaks Virtual, pulls back the curtain on the fast pace of innovation in the virtual cycling world. From supporting completely custom GPX route uploads, called GPXplore, to immersive, realistic physics for cornering and drafting, the focus is on making indoor training both motivating and specific to real-world cycling. George emphasizes the value of credibility and seamless integration — your outdoor and indoor data, preferences, and progress are all in sync for an experience that works as hard as you do.
Tim, founder of Basecamp Coaching and TrainingPeaks WKO product lead, shares how his holistic approach unites expert coaching, nutrition, strength, and mental skills. By leveraging technology and community-driven group workouts, Basecamp delivers individualized plans that encourage consistency and bring the camaraderie of a training camp right to your room or pain cave. Tim urges coaches to lean into building engaging communities, use technology to scale their expertise, and focus on process-oriented growth rather than endless racing or chasing every metric.
Key takeaways: Successful indoor training isn’t about generic “spin classes” or chasing the latest trend — it’s about purposeful structure, real-world specificity, and the power of community. Learn about features like Zen mode for focused training, heart rate-based ERG workouts, and dynamic challenge events. Listen in for a fresh look at how tech, expert guidance, and meaningful connection can help you nail your goals — whether you’re prepping for your first century, a bucket-list crit, or want to start your season stronger than ever.
Standout Quotes
Tim on How Basecamp Leaned Into Community: “So we decided to lean into the technology of indoor training. Smart trainers began this empowerment, but not just because it made workouts easy to prescribe, execute, and track, but because it opened the door to a group of virtual training platforms through interactive experiences and ways to touch athletes — that took some creative thinking, but actually got higher contact. So what Basecamp is is a 16-week virtual group training program. Now we say virtual because a lot of the experience is virtual. The community that we form in this virtual training is online.”
“You’d be surprised how many people indoors we run into our system who don’t know how to stand on a bike.”
Tim Cusick on Surprising Gaps in Indoor Cycling Skills

The Most Significant Update to TrainingPeaks Virtual: “They can now just simply upload a GPX file of their chosen course and go ride it. Now TrainingPeaks Virtual will just fully auto-generate all of the roads, all of the landscape, the trees, the plants, the grass, rivers, lakes, fences, whatever. You know, it exactly replicates the course in seconds, and you can just go ride it. It’s just incredibly simple, incredibly easy, and just works.”
“But but the people who understand what actual cycling is all about and and back off and then reaccelerate, they they move on, and they’re the people who are winning these races, both on virtual, but they’re also gaining the training benefit and winning races out in the real world as well.”

Tim on The Future of Custom Fitness Plans with Technology: “We lean into the TrainingPeaks system, and you, you know, a lot of coaches don’t know TrainingPeaks has API and some other support for companies that know how to leverage that. We lean into that system, and then you get one of those 96 plans loaded for you. It will match your needs probably 95%. I’d love to say a 100, maybe someday through, you know, ongoing advancements and some AI and selection process we can get there. But still, it is very customized to you, and it really supports the development, it’s driven by the development of a good base training, a good foundational kind of work.”
